I’ve always had strong opinions about bands disbanding and then moving on to form new groups. It’s perfectly all right if the decision was made prior to a group’s fame. I’d understand that. But when, after struggling hard to get to where you are—to get somebody to sign you and produce a label for you, to help you market your record and gain huge following; to sells millions of albums and gain a global popularity—and leave the group, it feels sad, terribly sad. This is what I felt when I heard Blink 182 was splitting up.

I guess it’s perfectly normal for groups to go on separate ways. You’re bound to see them eventually, either as a solo act, or as a front man for another band. After Blink’s fall out, Angels & Airwaves music was born.

Angels & Airwaves is the band formed by Blink’s singer and guitarist Tom DeLonge. This was a project that he has been working on for six months prior to the Blink 182’s break up—quite surprising that he has deliberately worked on a new band even though he’s still with his old one. I wonder how the rest of the group felt back then.

As he said in his interviews, Tom said that Angels & Airwaves would infuse many elements of music. That they would be taking inspiration from some of the greatest in the music scene: U2 and Pink Floyd.

In short, the band would produce a different kind of music from Blink 182. Tom meant for the group to change the face of rock ‘n roll forever—something I have yet to see from any music artist.

Angels & Airwaves unveiled themselves to a sold-out crowd back in 2006, and it was a blast! You could tell by that time that the band will be having their share of fame and fortune. But all good things must come to an end. After releasing their second studio album “I-Empire” Tom reunited with Blink 182.

I would have been terribly disappointed had I been a huge fan of Angels & Airwaves. But I’m more of a Blink 182 kind of guy so this was happy news for me. They announced the reunion after they appeared together on stage at the Grammys.

There are a lot of things people can say about Angels & Airwaves. Some may look at the band as the root of the disbanding of one of the music industry’s biggest names. Usually, when artists leave their group for another, public reaction will be harsh. But fortunately, it is not the case for Angels & Airwaves.

We ought not to look at it in a negative way. We can look at it as a side project—a very beautiful and successful side project.

As I said, I may not have been the biggest Angels & Airwaves fan, but I will have to say, the band produced some great music.
